GHD (Glute-Ham Developer)
Equipment
A glute-ham developer is a piece of equipment that anchors the feet and lower legs so athletes can perform posterior chain exercises — primarily glute-ham raises, back extensions, and hip extensions — through a full range of motion. It’s one of the most effective tools available for developing the hamstrings eccentrically, which is directly relevant to injury prevention in sprinting and jumping athletes.
What Coaches Should Know
The GHD is significantly underused in most weight rooms, especially at the high school level. Hamstring strains are one of the most common soft tissue injuries in team sports, and eccentric hamstring strength — exactly what the GHR develops — is one of the best-supported preventive measures we have. If you have one and you’re not using it regularly, reconsider your programming.
The GHD also does double duty as a back extension station. For programs short on equipment, a quality GHD can cover a lot of posterior chain work with a single footprint. Pad quality and adjustability matter — look for a unit where the knee pad and foot plate are both independently adjustable for different athlete sizes.
