Cable Machine
Equipment
A cable machine uses a weight stack connected via cables and pulleys to provide resistance through a full range of motion. Unlike free weights, cables apply constant tension throughout the movement and allow force to be applied from any angle — making them particularly useful for rotational movements, single-arm and single-leg exercises, and rehabilitation-adjacent strength work. Most facilities use functional trainers (dual cable systems with adjustable pulleys) rather than single-stack machines.
What Coaches Should Know
Cable machines fill a real gap in barbell-centric programming — specifically for movements that require constant tension across a range of motion, rotational patterns, and unilateral work. Chops, pallof presses, single-arm rows, face pulls, and cable pull-throughs are movements that transfer well to sport and are difficult or impossible to replicate with free weights alone.
For facility planning, a dual cable functional trainer is more versatile than a single-stack cable column and worth the additional footprint. Commercial-grade cable systems have weight stacks of 200+ lbs and use sealed bearings that hold up to daily use. Budget options with lighter stacks and cheaper hardware will work for low-volume programs but wear out quickly under team use.
